Biography

Ilze Sims is a multimedia artist based on the lush Hamakua Coast of Hawai‘i Island. Her luminous, textured works - often described as “glowing and flowing” - shimmer with gold leaf and raised relief, capturing the movement of water, the radiance of inner light, and the quiet power of nature.

Originally from South Africa, Ilze followed a spontaneous dream that led her to sail across oceans before ultimately making Hawai‘i her home. That leap of faith shaped not only her life, but her art. Each piece becomes a journey - layered, dimensional, and alive with emotion - guided by a golden thread of remembrance that runs through her work and her life.

Working with plaster, acrylics, oils, and delicate metal leaf, Ilze creates surfaces that reflect light like sun dancing beneath tropical waters. Lagoon blues, molten gold accents, and organic textures echo coral reefs, volcanic landscapes, and the sacred rhythms of the Pacific.

Exhibiting in Hawai‘i and Laguna Beach, and internationally in Tahiti, Ilze’s work continues to evolve through her connection to Polynesian culture and oceanic landscapes. At its heart, her art is an invitation to pause, breathe, and reconnect - to the light within, to the present moment, and to the quiet knowing that exists before everything else.
